Trekking in Spain - Picos de Europa

Your adventure begins as you touch down in Bilbao, where you’ll gather with fellow explorers in the arrivals hall by mid-afternoon. From the vibrant Basque city, journey as a group through scenic landscapes to the charming town of Potes, before continuing to the mountain village of Sotres. Nestled high in the Picos de Europa, Sotres offers breathtaking vistas and a warm welcome at Hotel Rural Casa Cipriano (or similar). Here, rustic comforts, hearty Asturian cuisine, and local hospitality set the tone for your week of discovery. Unwind in the cozy bar or on the terrace, and browse the family-run shop for regional delicacies and souvenirs.

Embark on your first full day of hiking as you traverse the eastern massif of the Picos de Europa. After a short transfer to Jito de Escarandi, ascend towards Casetón de Ándara, taking in sweeping views of the Majada Jazuca Valley and the dramatic Canal de las Vacas. The trail leads you to Collado Tramacondiu and circles around Macondiu Peak, before descending through the tranquil Valdediezma Forest. Today’s journey takes you from Sotres to the picturesque Invernales de Cabao, crossing rivers and climbing switchbacks to a panoramic viewpoint. The route continues to the historic hamlet of Pandébano, site of ancient battles, before ascending to the base of the iconic Naranjo de Bulnes. Marvel at this towering monolith, a legendary challenge for climbers, before returning to Sotres for another restful night.

Descend through alpine scenery to Puente Poncebos, where a medieval bridge marks the gateway to the awe-inspiring Garganta del Cares. Trek along this dramatic gorge, carved deep into the mountains, navigating paths, tunnels, and bridges that reveal the wild beauty of the Picos. After this exhilarating hike, return by bus to Sotres to unwind and share stories of the day’s adventure.

Begin with a scenic drive to Jito de Escarandi, then descend through lush beech forests and pastures into the Sobra Valley. Pause in the remote village of Tresviso for a leisurely lunch, then continue along the Balcón de Pilatos to Urdón, where your bus awaits. Arrive in Potes, a medieval town famed for its stone bridges and riverside charm. Settle in at Hotel Infantando (or similar), where you can relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings at the edge of the Picos de Europa National Park.

Prepare your camera for a day of spectacular scenery. Depart Potes, stopping at the revered Santo Toribio de Liébana Monastery, before reaching Fuente Dé. Ascend by cable car to the high plateaux, where panoramic views of the Picos de Europa unfold. Trek through alpine meadows and descend the Aliva glacial valley, pausing for a picnic and a visit to the abandoned Las Manforas mines. Return to Sotres for a final evening in the mountains.

A short bus ride brings you to La Caballar, where today’s hike begins.
