Your adventure begins at Inverness train station in the early afternoon, where you join your fellow travelers for a scenic journey along the dramatic northeast coast of the Highlands. After a picturesque drive, you reach Scrabster Port and board a ferry that sails across the Pentland Firth to the charming town of Stromness on Orkney’s Mainland. Upon arrival, a short drive brings you to Kirkwall, your base for the week, where you settle into your comfortable hotel (or similar). In the evening, meet your tour leader for a warm welcome and orientation. Kirkwall’s rich Norse heritage is evident in its historic heart, home to the magnificent St Magnus Cathedral and the evocative ruins of the Bishop’s and Earl’s Palaces. After breakfast, set sail from Kirkwall harbor on a memorable ferry ride along the ancient Viking sea route to Westray, the 'Queen o' the Isles.' This remote island, with its rugged beauty and small population, offers a captivating circular walk to Noup Head, home to one of Britain’s largest seabird colonies. Marvel at dramatic cliffs, wildflowers, and the possibility of spotting puffins in season. Continue south along the coast, exploring the atmospheric ruins of Noltland Castle, built for Mary Queen of Scots. If time permits, stroll through the quaint village of Pierowall before returning by ferry to Kirkwall, where you can unwind after a day immersed in Orkney’s natural wonders.

Today, venture to the easternmost reaches of Mainland Orkney for a scenic walk on the Deerness Peninsula. Traverse grassy trails to the Brough of Deerness, a remarkable Viking Age settlement perched atop a sea stack, and listen to the mysterious echoes from the Gloup, a dramatic collapsed sea cave. The route continues along the coast to the poignant Covenanters Memorial. Later, cross to Lambholm Island to admire the beautifully decorated Italian Chapel, crafted by WWII prisoners of war, and learn about Orkney’s wartime history at the Churchill Barriers and Scapa Flow. Return to Kirkwall in the afternoon, with time to visit the iconic St Magnus Cathedral before it closes.

The journey culminates at Skara Brae, a 5,000-year-old Neolithic village and UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can explore the ancient dwellings and, if you wish, visit the nearby Skail House. Depending on time, you may also discover the evocative ruins of the Earl’s Palace in Birsay or step back in time at the Kirbuster Museum, a preserved 16th-century farmhouse. Return to your hotel in Kirkwall for a restful evening.

Immerse yourself in Orkney’s ancient past as you explore the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander among the mystical stone circles of the Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness, and, if visiting in summer, witness the ongoing archaeological work at the Ness of Brodgar. After breakfast, travel by ferry from Tingwall port to the island of Rousay, famed for its wealth of archaeological treasures. Explore the impressive Midhowe Chambered Cairn and Iron Age Broch, then hike across the moorlands to Knitchen Hill and Blochnie Hill, the island’s highest point, with sweeping views over the surrounding seascape. The walk passes through the RSPB’s Trumland Reserve, offering opportunities to spot local wildlife, including raptors and short-eared owls. If time and weather allow, continue to the dramatic headland of Faraclett. Return to Kirkwall in the afternoon for your final evening on Orkney.

After breakfast and check-out, journey to Stromness to board the morning ferry back to the Scottish mainland. From Scrabster, travel south through the Highlands, arriving in Inverness by late afternoon, where your unforgettable Orkney adventure concludes.
